Meet the Castello Lab

Professor in Systems Virology- Principal Investigator

2001 - 2008 Undergraduate and PhD studies in molecular virology at the laboratory of Prof. Luis Carrasco in the Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa, Madrid, Spain. I studied the roles of viral proteases as regulating cellular gene expression.
2009 - 2014 Joined Matthias Hentze lab at EMBL Heidelberg supported by a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship. My goals were to discover the complement of cellular proteins that interact with RNA. I developed new methods to identify RNA-binding proteins in cell, representing a breakthrough in our understanding of protein-RNA interactions.

2014 - 2020 Established my laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford funded by an MRC Career Development Award with the goal of developing new approaches to elucidate the composition of viral ribonucleoproteins in infected cells.
2020 – Present Moved to the MRC University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research as a Senior Lecturer, funded by an ERC consolidator Grant to unveil the mechanisms by which cellular RNA-binding proteins regulate virus infection. In 2022 I was promoted to Professor of Systems Virology at the University of Glasgow.
